In the late 19th century, the American Bison was hunted nearly to extinction. At their most endangered, there were fewer than 500 bison in the whole nation. A combination of intrepid conservationists and private ranchers have managed to get America’s bison population around 250 thousand.

Whether you’re looking to help with the conservation effort or start your own profitable buffalo ranch, Oklahoma Trophy offers bison starter herds. Each starter herd will provide everything you need to begin breeding bison on your ranch. Contact us today to speak with us about our herd and let us help you select the right American Bison calf or yearling bison for you.

Our Bison

When selecting the sires and dames of our herd, we spent a lot of time confirming that they’re 100% American bison. A lot of privately-raised bison have cow introgressions, either from the initial misguided attempt to bring them back from extinction or by ranchers trying to genetically engineer leaner red meat.

Each of our calves and yearlings is genetically tested to ensure that they’re pure bison. We keep this information on hand and pass it on when we sell a starter herd. This will also help you understand their genetic makeup and ensure the diversity of your herd as it grows.

Raising & Ranching Bison

Raising bison is a lot like raising cows. Of course, bison are only semi-domesticated. They’re more excitable and less tractable than cows. They’re also quite a bit faster and stronger, too. If you’re used to cows, you’ll need to use a lower voice and slower movements so you don’t spook the animal.

Bison are incredibly hardy, too. They need almost no indoor shelter, even during heavy snow. They’re adaptable to almost every climate in the continental United States. They even defend themselves from predators.

Unfortunately, they’re also quite a bit more active than cows. They can, for one, jump a lot of fences. What they can’t jump, they can break down. You’ll need to reinforce your barriers if you buy adult bison. Younger ones may be more tractable, though.

We’re always willing to help if you’re buying a starter herd. We’ll give you tips and pointers about raising your bison. If you’re looking to start a herd for production or as part of the conservation effort, contact us today to learn more.
