The American Bison Story

The American Bison herds were estimated to be between 40 and 60 million animals when the Americas were “discovered” in 1492. As the North America plains became settled by Europeans, the American Bison became sought after for its hide and meat and by the end of the civil war in 1865 the Bison numbers had dwindled to 15 million. By the late 1880’s the American Bison was on the verge of extinction because of irresponsible management decisions and wasteful hunting practices. By 1900 the American Bison had dwindled to less than 1,000 Bison. The American Bison was saved from extinction by a hand full of ranchers, conservationist, Native American Tribes, and politicians; brought together by President Theodore Roosevelt and the American Bison Society. Today there are about 500,000 Bison in North America, most of these animals live on private ranches, about 30,000 Bison live on Federal and State lands where they are protected. We proudly support about 200 American Bison.
